Journalism in competition with online: Who will survive?

Newspapers used to be considered the primary outlet for journalists to nationally and locally share factual news. But as society’s digital footprint increases, the many aspects within the journalism industry begins to suffer. Ultimately leading to an uncertain future for aspiring journalists. With print journalism being slowly replaced with online platforms, there are numerous issues with employment decreasing and false information being shared through citizen journalists. Despite the necessity for photographs and videos as proof of current events, citizens can access social platforms and share violent or misleading information rapidly. Google and Facebook have become a primary source for both entertainment and news. Thus provides a new outlet for media organisations to share articles to a variety of audiences. But as peer student, Georgia Cheer mentioned in her presentation, there are approximately 2.4 billion active Facebook users. Ultimately, the dependence of online rather than print makes it an obvious choice to act a journalist’s platform.

Initially seeming like a minor change, using Google and Facebook as media platforms can be extremely limiting for a journalists content and writing style. Due to the decreasing attention span of society, media organisations have strategically shortened articles to appeal to the younger and older generations. A recent research discovered sites such as the Daily Mail, that within a 100 word article, reader’s only read half or even less. Instead, they used the images to understand the context of the story. Not only is the creative outlet significantly limited for journalists, but also employment opportunities. In this day and age, journalists are expected to be the writer, record their own footage, and edit the image and audio. The need for more skill in the industry has damaged future possibilities for aspiring journalists.
